Carambar is the trademark of a soft caramel, originally made from caramel and cocoa, eight centimetres long for a mass of eight grams; in its beginnings the Carambar measured 6.3 centimetres for 5.5 grams. Its name is a “portmanteau” made up of “caramel” and “bar”. Created by the Delespaul company in 1954 in Marcq-en-Barœul (North), Carambar has successively belonged to Générale Alimentaire, Générale Occidentale, BSN – now Danone, Cadbury, then Mondelēz International at the end of a split from the American Kraft Foods. Following Mondelez’s resale request, the French pension fund Eurazeo took over the brand in 2017, which it brought together with other confectionery brands in the Carambar & Co. group. Inside each package is printed a “joke” intended for children. Mainly distributed in France, each year around one billion units of these confectionery products are consumed. This confectionery is now available in variants with artificial flavours of fruit, nougat (under the Caranougat brand) or cola, then in varieties with very marked artificial flavours (such as Atomic cactus). There is also a variety with two tastes (bigou), and the molo, richer in emulsifiers. The original confectionery is known to be firm and sticky, its modern variations being more flexible.
